Plasterwork basically involves plastering of the exterior and interior wall structure or plastering decorative moldings on walls and ceilings. It is the process that is referred to the ornamentation done with the different types of plasters. The process of creating the plasterwork is termed as rendering or plastering which is widely used in building construction. The final material required for plastering is prepared by mixing cement with fat lime or sand in combination with water.  You can do the plastering on your walls, ceilings, floors, pavements and any other areas. Plastered surfaces are durable, easy to clean and you can easily polish the plaster walls in future. #4 Different Types of Plastering Used in Construction

#1. Cement Plastering

This is the type of plaster which is prepared using standard Portland cement and this plastering is used for binding construction materials together. The ratio of the mixture to mortar depends on the nature of work to be done with plaster. For bathroom walls, you can use the ratio of the mortar is 1:3, while for the general plastering of the walls the ratio is 1:5 or 1:8 cement plaster mixture. The cement plastering is done in either one or two coats depending upon the requirements. Even if you want to install some stones such as marble, granite and limestone then also you need to prepare the base for this cement plastering.

#2. Lime Plastering

The surface preparation of lime plastering is as same as cement plastering, but the ingredients required for preparation depends on the coasts. For 1 coat the preparation includes 1 part of lime and 1.5 parts of sand, and for the second coat two parts of lime and one part of sand is mainly used, and for the last 3-4 coats the part of lime is 4, while the part of sand is one. This lime plastering is mainly suggested for internal plastering. You cannot do this plastering with your DIY skills, and it is suggested to hire professional plasterers to do this work. They are experienced, and they can easily mix the right amount of materials and apply the same to achieve best smooth surface.

#3. Stucco Plastering

This is the type of plastering that is mainly used for decorative purposes. The first coat of this plaster is called scratch coat that comprises of lime plaster of 12mm thickness and the second coat comprises of rich and fat lime plastering of 10mm and the final coat is the mixture of fine lime and grounded stones. The ratio of preparation for the first 2 coats is 1 part of cement and 3 parts of sand with over 10% of hydrated lime. The final coat of the plastering comprises 1 part of cement and 2 parts of sand which is mixed with coloring pigment. The plastering is done in the same way as lime and cement plastering and it is suitable for internal and external surfaces of the buildings.

#4. Mud Plastering

In this process, the wall surface is mainly prepared with cement plastering and then a mixture is prepared with cow dung and cement with a ratio of 3:2:1. The mud plastering is evenly dashed on the cemented wall surface using a wooden float and it again tampers after the 24 hours of mud plastering application. In order to prevent shrinkages and breakage of the plastering, the tampering process is performed. Upon proper tampering process, water is spread lightly over the surface and it is polished with a steel trowel.
